Strategic collaboration: Canada supports modernization of Moldova’s national security

Today, at the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Moldova, Minister Adrian Efros held a meeting with H.E. Gavin Buchan, Ambassador of Canada to the Republic of Moldova. The discussions focused on growing bilateral partnership in the field of home affairs.

Minister Efros emphasized the importance of open and efficient dialogue between the two countries, expressing gratitude for the constant support provided by the Canadian partners. He highlighted Canada’s role as a key supporter in Moldova’s efforts to reform and modernize its national security and defence sectors, especially in the current challenging security environment.

He also acknowledged Canada’s contribution to ongoing initiatives aimed at increasing the capabilities of Moldova’s National Police, particularly for managing challenges related to refugees and migrants.

Looking ahead, Minister Efros informed the Canadian official about the ministry’s current priorities, which include among others implementation of facial recognition technology, development of methodologies and strategies for risk prevention and response to exceptional situations, digitization and modernization of police services for increased operational effectiveness and reduced response time, development of capacity in behavioural analysis and profiling.

The bilateral meeting was followed by an official ceremony marking the handover of specialized equipment to the General Police Inspectorate under the “Strengthening National Police Capacities in the Republic of Moldova” project, implemented by the International Organization for Migration with support from the Government of Canada. The equipment includes 10 patrol vehicles, 20 PCs, 40 body cameras, 5 search kits, and 40 rugged tablets and will significantly enhance the operational capabilities of Moldovan police forces.
