Moldova is taking steps to align its national framework with the European Prüm II mechanism, enabling faster and more effective exchanges of police data with European authorities on wanted persons and property and identification of persons involved in cross-border crimes. To this end, the Government has approved a draft law on international police cooperation.
The draft law establishes the conditions and procedures for the automated exchange of DNA profiles, fingerprint data, vehicle registration data, facial images, police records, information related to major cross-border events, data used to prevent terrorist offences, information for identifying missing persons, and data on travel documents reported lost or stolen.
The legislation also establishes a single focal point for international police cooperation within the General Police Inspectorate and clearly defines the responsibilities of the authorities involved. At the same time, it introduces safeguards for personal data protection, access traceability, and the security of information exchange.
The new procedure is an important tool for preventing and combating cross-border crime. It enables the identification of perpetrators involved in cross-border offences, supports the resolution of criminal cases, and contributes to enhancing the security of citizens.
