Moldova highlights migration priorities at IOM Council session in Geneva

The State Secretary of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Mariana Lucrețeanu, participated in the 115th Session of the Council of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), held from November 26 to 28, 2024 in Geneva. During the general debate on November 27, 2024, themed “Regular Migration Routes: a global call to action”, Ms. Lucrețeanu highlighted Moldova’s priorities and ongoing efforts in migration management.

In her address, the State Secretary underscored the importance of international cooperation and sustainable policies for effective migration management. She outlined Moldova’s efforts to support Ukrainian refugees through concrete measures, including access to education, employment, healthcare, and social integration. Additionally, she stressed the need to enhance efforts to prevent and combat human trafficking and illegal migration.

A key highlight of the intervention was the presentation of the National Development Plan 2025-2027, which focuses on promoting the socio-economic and cultural integration of migrants, while ensuring their access to specialized services. Legislative initiatives supported by the IOM, aimed at facilitating the integration of foreigners, promoting cultural diversity and expanding economic opportunities were also discussed.

“With the support of the IOM, Moldova has introduced legislative amendments to facilitate the integration of foreigners, promote cultural diversity, uphold migrants’ rights and create opportunities for employment and investment”, the State Secretary said.

The intervention also emphasized the importance of enhancing institutional capacities for migration management in line with international and European standards. Moldova’s participation in this session underscored the country’s efforts to promote safe, orderly and regulated migration, contributing to sustainable development and providing support to communities impacted by migration.
