Modern security relies on strong partnerships, advanced technologies, capable institutions, and people working together. The Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) received a donation of 81 unmanned aerial systems (UAS) and related equipment, which will significantly enhance the operational capabilities of eight MIA units.
The new systems will provide real-time situational awareness and decision-making support, strengthening border surveillance, public order operations, emergency response, search and rescue missions, and the protection of critical infrastructure.
The donation was provided by the GS Foundation, with funding from the Federal Foreign Office of the Federal Republic of Germany, under the “Strengthening Security and Administrative Capacities within the Ministry of Internal Affairs” project.
The handover ceremony was attended by Minister of Internal Affairs, Daniella Misail-Nichitin, Deputy Head of Mission at the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in the Republic of Moldova, Peter Buschmann, and Chief Operating Officer of the GS Foundation, Stefan Schwarz, together with the heads of the MIA’s subordinate institutions.
“UAS technology provides faster access to information, a clearer operational picture, broader situational awareness, and stronger decision-making support. In many situations, it can make the difference between a delayed response and a timely one, between exposing personnel to unnecessary risks and ensuring their safety, and between fragmented intervention and coordinated action,” said Minister of Internal Affairs Misail-Nichitin.
The new systems will support the Border Police in monitoring the state border and detecting cross-border threats. Police officers will use them during public order and security operations, while the National Public Security Inspectorate will deploy them for traffic monitoring and patrol missions on national roads. The carabineers will use the drones to maintain and restore public order and security, and firefighters and rescuers will employ them during emergency response and search-and-rescue operations. The systems will also strengthen operational analysis and support the protection of critical infrastructure.
Beyond supplying modern equipment, the project establishes a unified framework for training and operating unmanned aerial systems across the Ministry of Internal Affairs. A dedicated operator training center will be established at the Ștefan cel Mare Academy, accompanied by standardized training curricula, common operational procedures, and internationally recognized training and certification for MIA personnel.
The GS Foundation’s support also includes specialized staff training, project management assistance, the digitalization of administrative processes and archives, the provision of modern IT equipment, and additional measures aimed at improving MIA’s operational mobility and institutional response.
The Strengthening Security and Administrative Capacities within the Ministry of Internal Affairs project is aligned with the Internal Affairs Development Strategy for 2022 – 2030 and contributes to the MIA’s modernization by equipping its personnel with the technologies, skills, and operational capabilities needed to respond effectively to evolving security challenges.
