The Ministry of Internal Affairs participates in the 2nd International Migration Review Forum in New York

A delegation of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Moldova, led by Minister Daniella Misail-Nichitin, is participating in the 2nd International Migration Review Forum, taking place in New York from May 5 to 8, 2026.

The first day of the forum included high-level meetings and bilateral discussions focused on migration governance, the protection of displaced persons, combating irregular migration, strengthening international cooperation, and advancing the role of women in the security sector.

During a roundtable dedicated to the implementation of the objectives of the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration, Minister Misail-Nichitin presented Moldova’s progress in strengthening migration governance, modernizing the asylum system, and aligning national policies with European standards.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs highlighted the development of a migration framework built on the principles of human rights, responsibility, security, and international partnership. In recent years, Moldova has made significant progress in institutional modernization, the digitalization of migration processes, the strengthening of integrated border management, and the development of capacities to prevent irregular migration, migrant smuggling, and human trafficking.

Additionally, the Minister of Internal Affairs held a bilateral meeting with Bart van den Brink, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Asylum and Migration of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Discussions focused on deepening bilateral cooperation in the fields of migration and asylum, exchanging best practices in labor migration management, digitalizing registration processes for foreign nationals, improving reception systems for asylum seekers, and strengthening institutional preparedness for the implementation of the EU Pact on Migration and Asylum.

A key item on the agenda was the meeting with Sima Bahous, Executive Director of UN Women. Discussions focused on advancing gender equality, implementing the Women, Peace and Security Agenda, and strengthening the role of women in the security sector.

In this context, the Minister highlighted the work of the 1325 Secretariat, established to facilitate inter-institutional coordination, data analysis, and the monitoring of national progress in implementing the UN Security Council Resolution 1325.

The agenda also included a meeting with Johan Forssell, Minister for Migration of the Kingdom of Sweden. Discussions focused on bilateral cooperation in migration and asylum, the implementation of temporary protection mechanisms, readmission procedures, the digitalization of migration systems, and strengthening the institutional capacities of the General Inspectorate for Migration.

Through its participation in the 2nd International Migration Review Forum, the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Moldova reaffirms the country’s commitment to safe, orderly, and regular migration, the protection of human rights, and stronger international cooperation in addressing today’s migration and security challenges.
