Moldova is strengthening its European and international profile in migration management

Moldova’s participation in the 2nd International Migration Review Forum represents an important strategic opportunity to strengthen the country’s role in shaping international migration policy. Taking place in New York, the forum brings together governments, international organizations, and development partners to address one of today’s most pressing global challenges: ensuring migration is managed in a safe, orderly, and regular manner.

For Moldova, participation in this high-level platform reinforces the country’s position as an active and credible partner in the global dialogue on migration, while supporting the continued alignment of national policies with European and international standards.

At the same time, the presence of the Ministry of Internal Affairs delegation in New York provides an important framework for advancing dialogue with European partners in the context of Moldova’s accession process to the European Union.

In New York, Minister of Internal Affairs Daniella Misail-Nichitin met with Magnus Brunner, European Commissioner for Home Affairs and Migration. Discussions focused on Moldova’s European integration agenda and the priorities under Chapter 24 – Justice, Freedom and Security, with particular emphasis on migration, asylum, and integrated border management.

During the meeting, the Moldovan side presented the progress achieved in modernizing the migration and asylum system, strengthening integrated border management, and aligning national legislation and institutional practices with European Union standards. Meeting the interim benchmarks under Chapter 24 remains one of the Ministry of Internal Affairs’ key priorities and is directly linked to the National EU Accession Plan.

The Ministry of Internal Affairs’ core message is clear: Moldova is consolidating its position among states that manage migration through clear rules, accountable institutions, and strong international partnerships. This progress brings greater stability, predictability, and resilience to a policy area that sits at the intersection of human rights protection, internal security, and European integration.

Migration governance in line with international standards is a fundamental component of the European Union accession agenda. For Moldova, this means more coherent policies, better public services for Moldovan and foreign nationals, stronger capacities to prevent irregular migration, and deeper operational cooperation with European partners.

Additionally, Minister Misail-Nichitin held a bilateral meeting with Danilo Šaranović, Minister of the Interior of Montenegro, a candidate country for accession to the European Union. Discussions focused on the current stage of the European integration process, Montenegro’s experience in implementing European security standards, and opportunities to deepen cooperation in the field of home affairs.

The exchange of experience with Montenegro provided a valuable practical perspective on translating European requirements into institutional reforms, administrative capacity, and tangible results for citizens.

The Moldovan delegation also held constructive discussions with Colm Brophy, Minister of State for Migration of Ireland, focusing on cooperation in migration and asylum, as well as opportunities for institutional dialogue and the exchange of expertise between the two countries. Moldova’s participation in the New York Forum reaffirms the country’s role as a responsible and committed partner in migration governance. Through the initiatives promoted by the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Moldova is building a migration system that is more predictable, secure, and fully aligned with European and international standards – one that is capable of addressing both national priorities and the responsibilities the country has undertaken at the international level.
