For the Republic of Moldova, the border is no longer just a line that separates states. It is where security begins. A secure and well-managed border helps prevent risks, protects citizens, and strengthens national resilience. The stronger the border, the stronger the state, the safer its people, and the better prepared Moldova is for its European future.
The International Forum “Border Security – Institutional Development for Future Challenges” was held in Ungheni, bringing together representatives of border and security authorities from Moldova, Ukraine, Romania, Lithuania, and Latvia, alongside international partners and experts. The event served as a platform for dialogue, cooperation and the change of best practices in border management and security.
Addressing the forum, Minister of Internal Affairs Daniella Misail-Nichitin emphasized that border security today extends far beyond traditional border control. It requires institutions that can anticipate risks, cooperate effectively, and protect citizens in an increasingly complex security environment.
“We must continue to strengthen border management capabilities. This is not only about personnel, but also about modern technologies, rapid data exchange, interoperable systems, closer cooperation with European institutions, and the effective use of passenger data to identify and reduce risks. Stronger operational connectivity is equally important. Security depends on the balance between technology and well-trained professionals,” stated Minister Misail-Nichitin.
The forum featured three thematic panels focused on the security situation along the European Union’s eastern frontier, the efficient use of security resources, and the continuous professional development of border personnel. Participants also observed a tactical exercise and visited the Ungheni Border Police Sector, gaining first-hand insight into the practical implementation of border security measures.
The event reaffirmed that effective border security is built on trust, cooperation, and shared responsibility. At the heart of all these efforts are the citizens and their need to live in a safe and stable environment.
Moldova remains committed to contributing actively to regional security and strengthening its role as a reliable partner on Europe’s eastern border. This commitment translates into greater safety for citizens, increased stability for the country, and tangible progress on Moldova’s path towards European integration. Ultimately, investing in border security is an investment people, in national development, and in a safer and more resilient Europe.
