More than 3,800 people to benefit from improved emergency response with new volunteer fire and rescue station

Residents of Sofia village, Drochia district, and neighbouring communities will now benefit from better protection in emergencies. A new volunteer fire and rescue station was inaugurated in Sofia today, helping to reduce emergency response times and improve public safety.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by Victor Grosu, State Secretary of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Dmitrii Vieru, Deputy Head of the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations, representatives of local public authorities, the newly trained volunteers and development partners who supported the project.

Seven volunteers from the community will serve as volunteer firefighters and rescuers. Trained by IGSU instructors, they will be able to respond to fires, accidents and other emergencies, provide first aid and assist in rescue operations. Their presence in the community will enable a faster initial response while professional emergency crews are on their way, helping to protect lives and improve safety for local families.

“Protecting lives and ensuring people’s safety is a fundamental priority for the Ministry of Internal Affairs. Experience shows that the first few minutes are critical in an emergency. That is why every community needs the capacity to respond quickly before professional emergency services arrive. A resilient state begins with well-prepared communities, and the true value of investment in civil protection lies in the lives saved and the safety it provides to people”, said Victor Grosu, State Secretary of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

The new station is the 87th rescue and fire station in the Republic of Moldova and the 28th staffed by volunteers. Its establishment was made possible with the support of the Solidarity Fund PL and Polish partners through the EU4Moldova: Resilience – A Safe State, Resilient Communities project, as well as contributions from Sofia Town Hall.
