MIA and INL discuss essential projects for Moldova’s security

Chisinau, June 14, 2024 – The leadership of the Ministry of Internal Affairs held a bilateral meeting today with a delegation from the Office of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL), led by its Director Bryan Schubert. Discussions emphasized the strong operational partnership between the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) and the INL, based on an open and effective dialogue.
 

Minister Efros expressed appreciation for INL’s consistent support in various areas of home affairs, particularly in combating cross-border and cyber crime, trafficking in arms and human beings, as well as in preventing and combating corruption, stating that “the US remains one of the most important supporters of the development of the MIA”.
 

The official also highlighted the numerous training programmes implemented with US support, covering areas from border management to combating cybercrime, and particularly noted the successful launch of the TETRA project in December 2023.
 

Minister Efros reiterated Moldova’s strong interest in implementing joint projects focused on public order, risk and threat assessment, internal protection of employees, and preventing and combating terrorism. In this context, he mentioned two significant projects planned for 2024 with US support: one to strengthen screening capabilities at the second line of the border police, and another to develop the infrastructure of the Border Security Center of Excellence.
 

The officials addressed several priorities for future cooperation, including digitizing and modernizing police services to enhance operational efficiency and citizen security, strengthening police capabilities to investigate crimes using open source intelligence, developing behavioral analysis and profiling, bolstering efforts to combat trafficking in weapons of mass destruction and other dangerous materials, and expertise in financial transactions involving cryptocurrencies, including specialized software for these operations.
 

The meeting concluded with a mutual expression of openness to continue cooperation and successfully implement future projects and initiatives aimed at enhancing the safety and security of the Republic of Moldova.
