The Ministry of Internal Affairs, in partnership with UNESCO, launches training activities to enhance the safety of journalists

The Ministry of Internal Affairs, in partnership with UNESCO, agreed to launch a series of joint training activities for police and other law enforcement agencies focused on the safety of journalists. The event brought together representatives of the Ministry and UNESCO’s Section for Freedom of Expression and Safety of Journalists.

“The protection of journalists is essential to safeguarding press freedom. Through this partnership with UNESCO, we aim to equip law enforcement agencies with the knowledge and tools needed to prevent and effectively respond to incidents affecting journalists”, said Alexandru Bejan, State Secretary at the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

UNESCO representatives Giulia Melotti and Mehdi Benchelah presented the methodology of the global training programme for law enforcement agencies, highlighting the importance of sharing international experience and case studies with practical relevance to improving journalist safety.

As part of the joint activities, participants will examine relevant cases from Moldova and develop a concrete implementation plan for the training programme, as well as a practical guide for police officers and prosecutors. On the final day, media representatives will be invited to contribute to a comprehensive approach to the issue and to strengthen cooperation between authorities and journalists.

Through this initiative, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and UNESCO aim to deliver tangible results and foster new avenues for cooperation, ultimately contributing to the protection of journalists and the strengthening of the rule of law.
