Moldova is set to establish a single mechanism for exchanging information with the authorities of European Union Member States, aimed primarily at preventing and combating cross-border crime. The draft legislation, prepared by the Ministry of Internal Affairs, has been approved by the Government.
The draft provides for the establishment of a Single Point of Contact to coordinate the exchange of information between the Moldovan authorities and those of EU Member States. The new mechanism will enable faster checks on individuals, vehicles and documents relevant to criminal investigations. Where necessary, it will allow access to information such as DNA profiles, fingerprints and facial images.
The system will help authorities identify more quickly individuals suspected of involvement in criminal activity, as we;; as stolen vehicles or lost or stolen documents, including in cases involving more than one country.
By facilitating faster and more efficient information exchange, the mechanism will support cross-border crime investigations and contribute to strengthening public safety.
The mechanism will become operational once all the stages required under the legislation have been completed.
