The Republic of Moldova is updating its framework for international cooperation to reflect current realities and the country’s European integration path. In this context, the Government has approved the denunciation of the 2005 Agreement on cooperation between the Member States of the Commonwealth of Independent States in combating trafficking in human beings, human organs and tissues.
The decision reflects the need to update the international instruments underpinning Moldova’s cooperation in preventing and combating human trafficking. Today, this area is supported by more recent international and European instruments, including the Council of Europe Convention on action against trafficking in human beings, as well as by cooperation mechanisms with European partners and INTERPOL.
By denouncing the Agreement, Moldova is aligning its international cooperation framework with the mechanisms and standards it currently applies and is focusing its efforts on the instruments most relevant to preventing and combating human trafficking and protecting victims.
The denunciation of the Agreement is intended to ensure greater consistency between Moldova’s international cooperation and its European integration path, while modernising the legal basis for cooperation in this area. The decision will not require any expenditure from the state budget, amendments to national legislation or the establishment of new institutional structures.
