The Moldovan Government has approved amendments to the Law on forensic DNA profiling, paving the way for the country’s participation in European mechanisms for the exchange of DNA profile data in criminal investigations.
As crime increasingly transcends national borders, effective international cooperation has become essential. A DNA profile identified in Moldova may be linked to an individual or a crime under investigation in another European country, and vice versa. Faster access to DNA profile data will enable law enforcement authorities to identify perpetrators more efficiently, and solve criminal cases more rapidly.
The amendments establish the legal framework necessary to connect Moldova’s national forensic DNA profiling system to European data exchange mechanisms in line with European Union standards.
They also introduce clear rules governing the collection of biological samples for forensic DNA profiling from persons under criminal investigation or convicted of criminal offences. The legislation clearly defines the categories of individuals from whom samples may be collected, based on the seriousness of the offence, ensuring greater legal certainty and the consistent application of the law.
At the same time, the new provisions reinforce safeguards for the protection of personal data. Only DNA markers standardized at the European level will be processed, enabling authorities to establish an individual’s identity without revealing information about genetic characteristics, hereditary traits, or health status.
By aligning the national framework with European standards, the amendments will strengthen the effectiveness of criminal investigations, enhance operational cooperation with European partners, and equip law enforcement authorities with a modern tool to combat cross-border crime and improve public safety.
