Chisinau, June 5, 2024 – The Secretary of State, Andrei Cecoltan, held a meeting with a delegation, led by Director General of the Belgian Immigration Office, Freddy Roosemont, which was also attended by the Ambassador of the Kingdom of Belgium to Moldova, H.E. Evert Maréchal.
The meeting focused on enhancing the Moldovan-Belgian relations, particularly in the area of migration and internal affairs.
During the meeting, Mr. Cecoltan emphasized the importance of deepening political dialogue, in particular in light of the expected opening of the accession negotiations of our country with the EU, assuring the Belgian official of Moldova’s ”strong committment to make all the necessary efforts in order to become part of the EU family”.
The officials gave an overview of the migratory situation in Belgium and Moldova, and discussed the migratory flows from Moldova to Belgium and vice versa, both legal and irregular, with a specific focus on asylum, illegal stay and return. Additionally, they explored opportunities to increase bilateral cooperation in the field of migration, especially prevention and provision of information to the population.
The Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Moldova looks forward to continued collaboration with the Belgian Immigration Office to address common challenges and enhance mutual understanding and cooperation in the field of migration.
