The development of partnerships with the EU Member States in the field of safety and security of citizens is one of the main objectives of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
In this context, Secretary General of the Ministry Sergey Diaconu, and State Secretary Daniella Misail-Nichitin held a bilateral meeting with Programme Director of the Estonian Development, Security and Support Organisation, Jaan Hein, and Head of the Eastern Partnership Department of the Estonian Center for International Development (ESTDEV) Lauri Luht.
Discussions focused on the institutional objectives of the MIA and the potential support provided by Estonian representatives in relation to regional security, protection of the state border from cross-border crime and public order, including by accelerating cooperation within the Support Hub for Internal Security.
Representatives of the Ministry of Internal Affairs have informed about the steps that MIA is undertaking in the accession process to the European Union. In this regard, Secretary General Sergey Diaconu spoke about the MIA’s development plan, based on digitalization, building a modern and flexible security system that responds qualitatively and timely to the challenges generated by the crisis and hybrid war. At the beginning of the discussions, the officials talked about increasing the capacities of the subdivisions so that the staff could adapt as quickly as possible to emergency situations and external challenges, as well as strengthening and developing new partnerships.
At the end, State Secretary Daniella Misail-Nichitin expressed the hope for an active cooperation between the Estonian Academy of Security Sciences and the ‘Stefan cel Mare’ Academy. The State Secretary reiterated the possibility of Estonia being a mentor country in the field of digitisation in the context of hybrid threats.
The Estonian side expressed interest and openness to strong cooperation in the field of internal affairs.
