The Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) has received support and donations of over € 1.78 million from external development partners during the first 3 months of this year.
Germany, Romania, Poland, Czech Republic, USA, UK, Japan, Sweden, jointly with intergovernmental bodies such as Interpol, Europol, Cepol, UNICRI, and others, have launched during the first quarter of this year a number of new projects in all the areas of competences of the MIA. In total, at this stage, the Ministry’s subdivisions are managing 73 ongoing projects in key sectors of activity.
The General Police Inspectorate has received donations worth a total of more than € 880 thousand – 38 new cars, high-performance anti-smuggling equipment, personal protective equipment for police officers, dozens of computing units, electric generators. The equipment is already being used in police work all over the country.
The General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations (GIES) has improved its technical capabilities in the field of radioactive waste management.
Special vehicles and ladders worth a total of more than €10 million will be purchased thanks to a grant agreement signed with the Government of Japan through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). For the first time, Japan is among the external donors of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
One of the most important ongoing projects concerns the alignment of our country to the EU Civil Protection Mechanism. Once the Republic of Moldova joins the EU civil protection network, our citizens would benefit from the highest level of services from firefighters and rescuers.
Our country has received under this Mechanism, during the first quarter of this year, 58 thermal imagers equipped with accessories and 20 high-capacity electrical generators. Efforts to improve quality indicators continue. The GIES Directorate is currently in the process of negotiating with the World Bank and the European Union on two large projects that would enable the procurement of intervention equipment and improve the early warning system.
The Border Police has been provided with high-performance equipment and devices worth more than € 1 million – radio stations, handheld anti-drone jammer devices, camera-trap sets with accessories, quadcopters, detectors for hazardous substances, computer technology, etc.
The General Inspectorate for Migration (GIM) launched two important projects supported by the European Union: ‘Strengthening the human rights protection of refugees and migrants in the Republic of Moldova’ and ‘Law enforcement and community cooperation and training approach to prevent radicalisation by ensuring refugees’ successful inclusion’. With the support of German development partners, the GIM is currently establishing, for the first time in our country, the Register of Foreigners.
Students of the ‘Stefan cel Mare’ Police Academy will benefit from better study conditions and will have the opportunity to develop their practical skills, thanks to new infrastructure and research projects funded by the European Union. An innovation for the ‘Stefan cel Mare’ Academy is the development of the digital library. This library will be accessible not only to students of the Academy, but also to people not involved in internal affairs.
During the first quarter of this year, the employees of the General Inspectorate of Carabineers attended several trainings to improve their reaction and collaboration capacity with colleagues from other MIA’s divisions in joint actions to manage illegal migration, riots at checkpoints and to defend public order.
These are just some of the most important results assessed during the working meeting of the ‘Together 4 Home Affairs’ sectoral Council of the MIA.
The ‘Together 4 Home Affairs’ sectoral Council is the coordination mechanism, which builds pillars for home affairs sector to support the sustainable development of the country and the implementation of the concept of the European Union’s extended security belt, which would include the Republic of Moldova.
